Perhaps you've heard of it, but I use a site called Rotten Tomatoes to check out stats and information on the latest and older movies (and if you must know why I decided to write about it, I did because I use it a lot and it was the first thing that came to mind). The site basically acts as a clearinghouse for movie reviews - it compiles every review that a movie has received, determines if it is a positive or negative one, then creates an average score for the movie (a percent of how many reviewers liked it) based on this info. The reviews are collected from all sorts of sources posted online, including newspapers' archives and notable movie blogs/websites, so the information can mostly be considered "expert reviews," depending on your opinion of the experts themselves; users can also rate the film themselves and write comments, but these reviews are not taken into consideration in the "tomatometer." Furthermore, to help organize the information, the site has a seperate section on the side called "Cream of the Crop." This section takes the reviews from all sites and prints with a high readerbase or respectability (e.g., New York Times, Village Voice, Chicago Sun Times, Variety) and seperates them from the regular section. The Cream of the Crop also has its own unique percentage in addition to contributing to the overall percentage score.

One competing site of Rotten Tomatoes' is Metacritic. The big difference between the two is that while Rotten Tomatoes makes a general score based on whether a reviewer liked the movie or not, Metacritic takes the reviewer's actual score into account. Metacritic's averages, therefore, will usually be lower than Rotten Tomatoes, but they also carry a little bit more weight to them, as they are a more direct representation of a critic's opinion of the movie. Metacritic's criteria is also a little more lenient than Rotten Tomatoes, using a three-tier color system that designates between good reviews, mixed reviews, and negative reviews, rather than Rotten Tomatoes' rigid, oft-considered unfair "pass-fail" scoring system.

I chose Capitol One and Foot Locker completely randomly, actually. At first, I did Microsoft and Apple as a joke, but after that was a bust, I just chose two random companies, starting with Capitol One, then picking Foot Locker because it seemed like the most mismatched pair I could think of. I was surprised that the held chairman positions were actually pretty diverse; there were banking companies, clothing stores, etc.

So I put the website Seanbaby on the CS103 bookmarks page. Why? Because:

I've been reading Seanbaby for almost five years now, and I love his work.

Seanbaby only really has a cult following, and I'd like to expand that.

I love the way he writes; his style and attitude screams a mix of frat-boy and DND nerd, and when it comes down to him writing about shitty NES games and bizarre/racist comic ads, it works so well.

Did I mention that I love his work? I've read everything on that site, some articles multiple times even, and they're still hilarious.

It was about time the bookmark page had something risque posted that wasn't gonna bite someone in the ass (i.e., the now-infamous Nigga Know Technology.

Okay, so I created my Creative Commons license; this license states that people are free to distribute my work and change it around as they see fit, but need to credit me and can not use it for profit. Why did I choose this?

Simple: it's my work. I don't want some random person from the Internet taking what I've written and saying "Hay dude check out what I did lol!" It's not right. Same with someone selling my work - it's not right. I wrote it, I should be the one getting credit for it and profiting off of it if I so choose to!

Docurama Madness!! Part 1

Ladies and gentlemen, it's docurama madness here at the house that ninjas built! That's right, I've gone a little crazy over the past week or so, seeing nothing but documentarys. That's right - documentaries and nothing else! So here's the write-up on the lucky three:

The U.S. Vs. John Lennon

Imagine a biopic about John Lennon getting okay/good reviews. It's easy if you try. Click the picture to to to the movie's site on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ever wanted to see a biopic about a controversial, important musician that feels hollow and like something's missing? No? Well, here's one anyway! This VH1-sponsered rockumentary follows Lennon and Yoko Ono's political and protest exploits throughout the sixties and seventies, which led to being blacklisted and almost deported by Nixon. It's a fun watch, especially if you're a Lennon or Beatles fan, and it puts his protest exploits into context; plus, it has some really good interviews, and adds a nice little critiques of our current situation. A good watch, but at the same time, it feels a little empty. The film doesn't talk about any of the bad shit Lennon was doing at the time (like, oh I don't know, heroin or any of the other drugs he did during the seventies); it makes Lennon look like a Ghandiesque saint, and knowing Lennon, that's just bullshit upon bullshit. In all honesty, though, I can't figure out who this is made for: Lennonaholics, Beatlemainacs, and general fans of rock will know everything in this movie and then some, and no one else will probably care. Also, this movie panders WAY too much to Yoko, but if this surprises you, the ending to this movie is gonna blow your fucking mind! *SPOILERS!! JOHN LENNON IS SHOT!!*

So I was reading Seanbaby, and I was all like "LOL AHAHAHAHAHAHA!" So then I read some Dinosaur Comics, because I like those. It was at this time that I realized that the only reason I'm writing this entry is because I have serious writers' block and can't come up with a better entry through which to complete the homework assignment, and will probably delete this in a couple days to purge the shame away.
